It’s time to admit the truth, we Miamians take Viscaya for granted. I have met some Miami transplants who love their new adopted city and yet had never seen nor heard of Viscaya!
Most native Miamians have been there at least once or twice for wedding or fundraiser. My fave trip was when my middle school theater class got to attend the amazing Renaissance Fair – that set an unrealistically high standard for Ren Fairs for me for life.
As time went on, I hardly found the time to go back to the estate to just to sit in awe and enjoy the grounds. In my early 20’s, I stumbled upon a PBS documentary about Viscaya narrated by our hometown star, Andy Garcia. I was living in NYC at the time – probably freezing cold and sheltered up in my apartment – and this little reminder of home was there on my channel guide. I have never looked at Miami the same again since that documentary and I make sure to tell everyone that has never visited Miami before about it. So I always appreciate it when Viscaya gets the recognition it deserves from travel writers, like in this Forbes.com article from Fathom: “Miami’s Version Of The Gatsby Mansion Is A Touch Italian”
